NELAart Second Saturday Gallery Night is a free self-guided tour of the galleries, non-profits and artist run project spaces located in Northeast Los Angeles (NELA).

NELA has a tradition in the arts that dates back to the early 1900s.

The tradition continues with new spaces opening regularly. NELA is now one of L.A.’s most exciting destinations to view contemporary art.

OPENING AT AVENUE 50 STUDIO: GANAS 2020, an exhibition of stencil and collage on canvas, and rubyliths by artist Ernesto Yerena. The exhibition is based on a story written by Yerena detailing a fictional revolutionary movement, GANAS, fighting for reform, empowerment and dignity. The opening reception for GANAS 2020 will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2011 from 7-10 PM. The exhibit will be on display through September 4, 2011 and is free and open to the public.

Yerena, born in El Centro, California, currently living in Los Angeles, but moving to Arizona fights for justice not only on paper, but in the community. He is the founder and curator of the Alto Arizona Art Campaign and the We Are Human Campaign.

Opening at The Avenue 50 Studio is proud: Democracy and Art, a visual conversation of the role of art in a democracy. Thirty works were selected by curator, activist and art historian Carol A. Wells, who also serves as the founder and executive director of the Center for Study of Political Graphics. Chosen artists address the shifting meanings of freedom and equality, censorship and civil liberties. Using art as a vehicle for the discussion of political issues has a rich history, at times shrouded in censorship. Please join us as 23 artists converse on questions of democracy.

The Annex Presents: Pages from a Bahía Diary

Selected from a field of over 500 artists worldwide, J Michael Walker was one of seven chosen by the Sacatar Foundation to spend January-February 2011 on the jungle island of Itaparica, in Bahía, Brazil. Here, in the land of candomblé, under gorgeous skies and amid palpable spirits, he immersed himself in the local community, embraced by its warm, generous people. Opening Night Reception: Saturday, February 12, 2011 from 7-11 pm

“I have always wanted to be a magician. These small theaters allow me to play that role.”

The Avenue 50 Studio is proud to present its February exhibition, Circulo Magico/Magical Circus by assemblage artist Armando Arreola. With material obsession, Armando Arreola creates small diorama theater scenes of magicians at work. Among the 14 theaters, we see the sword swallower, the lady being sawed in half, and the woman levitated over fire– while the small audience delights in the magic of the magician. We are drawn into the tiny magical world of Armando Arreola. He obviously delights in assembling his dioramas (and probably smiles or laughs while creating them). All would be upbeat, except for one factor: smudged faces with matted hair adorns each participant. We’ve walked into Arreola’s slightly dark world – not bloody, not violent – a Ray Bradbury novel-like world. There is magic here, as we play voyeur peering through side windows, or from the top of the theater. But isn’t that what originally a circus was supposed to be? Strange, mysterious, other worldly. Circulo Magico is actually very charming. The children will love it, and so will adults.
